World House Cambridge

Welcome to the website of World House Cambridge!

On Saturday 28th June 2008, the first World House event in Cambridge will be taking place at the Junction, with a mindbogglingly diverse mix of musicians, dancers, workshops and stalls. The aim is to feature representation of as many of the world's communities and traditions as are present in Cambridge, to celebrate world music and culture.

In keeping with the spirit of Martin Luther King's "World House" concept, this is a not-for-profit enterprise. Fingers crossed, this will be the first of many such events in Cambridge!

To close, we can do no better than to quote Martin Luther King's vision in his 1964 Nobel Prize acceptance speech which gives the event its name:-

This is the great new problem of mankind. We have inherited a big house, a great "world house" in which we have to live together - black and white, Easterners and Westerners, Gentiles and Jews, Catholics and Protestants, Moslem and Hindu, a family unduly separated in ideas, culture, and interests who, because we can never again live without each other, must learn, somehow, in this one big world, to live with each other.

You may have noticed that this website looks fairly hastily thrown together. That's because it is! Trust us, we'll have something better soon. In the meantime, if you're a performer in any of the folk or classical traditions of countries around the world, give us a call and sign up. If you're with a paper or local radio, give us a call and we'd be grateful to put our cause forward. And if you're just interested in listening to great music, keep Saturday 28th June free so you can come along and have a good time!
